A golden Maltese cross covered with red enamel and gold Russian double-headed imperial eagles between its arms. A central medallion depicting the handwritten monogram "SS". Around the central medallion is an enamel laurel wreath. Russian coat of arms stamped on the reverse of the arm at 12 o’clock, maker’s mark “AK” for Albert Keibel of St. Petersberg on the six o’clock. Engraving on the beam on the left: “N.R” and engraving on the beam on the right, “Dec. 25, 1919.”
The award was instituted on 7 May 1765.
