Mihail Chemiakin, born in 1943 in Moscow, is a Russian painter, sculptor, stage designer, and publisher. Chemiakin spent his early years in Eastern Germany where his father served in the military. They have returned to the Soviet Union in 1957. Chemiakin attended the Il’ya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in Leningrad but was expelled for non conforming with the socialist norms. He worked at the Hermitage Museum, where he founded a group of artists that went against the soviet norms. He was exiled from the USSR in 1971, after being forced to go under psychiatric treatment. Chemiakin then relocated to France and later on to New York, and only visited Russia beginning in the 1990s.
