Gilded hilt, wood ribbed handle wound with twisted wire, cross guard with masonic symbols on one side and "GUOOF" (Grand United Order of Odd Fellows) on the other, straight blade decorated with etched floral designs and owners name, marked on ricasso by WM. H. HORSTMANN COMPANY / PHILADELPHIA indicating that the sword was manufactured in 1820-50. Metal scabbard. GUOOF was founded in 1843, its membership has principally included African Americans, due to black people being discriminated.
