European artists starting from the 17th century were fascinated by the views of ancient ruins so there are many works of this style. Ruins became an artistic and philosophical metaphor for the passage of time. The scene depicted in the picture is also a kind of an image of the victory of nature over culture: all elements of the depicted ruins are covered with grass new sprouts break out from the cracks in the buildings.
Dimensions: 34 x 27 1/2 in., (86.5 x 70 cm.) Frame 38 1/2 x 32 1.2 in., (98 x 82.5 cm.)
Condition: Good condition, with traces of craquelure on the paint layer, wear is comparable with time.
