Charles-Etienne Le Guay (French, 1762-1846) watercolor on paper painting titled "Victory" depicting a young man with a torch in his hands, flying through the sky in a chariot drawn by four horses. Signed lower left. Please refer to the original Alexander Gallery paper labels on the back. Charles-Etienne Le Guay was a French painter of genre scenes. Exhibited at the Salon from 1795 to 1819. The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York has Sevres porcelain teapot, cup and saucer, and tray decorated by Le Guay with painted neoclassical scenes described in the Sevres factory’s records as the "Loves of Amors and Nymphs." The title of the scene painted on the tray is "Accused Nymphs Appearing Before the Tribunal of Love". These pieces belonged in a breakfast service which was presented by Napoleon I to Princess Auguste-Amelie, wife of his stepson Eugene Beauharnais, on New Year’s day 1814.
