OHIO. On the front of the guard is inscribed the initials "UR" and lily. The reverse side is inscribed with the initials "FCB", which stands for the Pythian motto ("Friendship, Charity, Benevolence"). Sword pommel in the form of a knight’s helmet with a lion on the crest. The handle is made of wood covered with leather and wrapped with wire. The double-edged blade is covered with fine etching on both sides. Metal scabbard with beautiful decor. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order. M.C. Lilley & Company was a Columbus business that would benefit greatly as a manufacturer of ready-made uniforms after the war. By 1870, the company already occupied an entire four-story building on S. High Street, with a glass-fronted showroom and retail store on the first floor. This size of an operation positioned the company for tremendous growth and success in the coming "Golden Age of Fraternalism." During this period, from 1870-1910, over 20 percent of men in the United States belonged to a fraternal organization. Clothing played a very important role in the ritual ceremonies of these societies, and M.C. Lilley & Co. capitalized on this influx of demand by manufacturing ritual costumes and attire.
