Masonic sword for the "Knights of Pythias" order ceremony, with scabbard, offered a full knight of the Pythian order to J.M. Bourdeau, early 20th century. On the front of the guard is inscribed with the initials "UR" and lily. The reverse side is inscribed with the initials "FCB", which stand for the Pythian motto ("Friendship, Charity, Benevolence"). Sword pommel in the form of a knight’s helmet with a lion on the crest. The handle is made of wood covered with leather and wrapped with wire. The double-edged blade is covered with fine etching on both sides. Metal scabbard with beautiful decor. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order.
