Wassily Kandinsky (Russian, French, 1866 – 1944), a mixed media on paper painting depicting an abstract composition. Signed with the initials and dated 1929 lower left. Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky was a Russian and French artist and theorist, one of the pioneers of abstraction in western art. After successful avant-garde exhibitions, he founded the influential Munich group Der Blaue Reiter – The Blue Rider, 1911–14, and began completely abstract painting. Taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933.
