Icon of the Mother of God the "Milk-Giver" or the Barlov Mother of God, appeared on December 26, 1392, and it is in the Annunciation Cathedral in Moscow. This icon depicts the Virgin removing her robe to breastfeed her son Jesus. It may have originated from a passage in Luke’s Gospel in which a woman addresses Jesus proclaiming “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you” (Luke 11:27). The raised borders named kovcheg are painted with the images of Guardian Angel on the left side and Saints Martyrs Cyricus and Julitta on the right side. Hand-painted with egg tempera on gesso and wood panel. Circa: late 18th or early 19th century. Dimensions: 12 1/4 x 10 in., (31.2 x 25.5 cm.)
Condition: Very good with expected signs of wear.
