Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev (Russian, 1878 – 1927), tempera on board painting depicting a Church Interior. Signed with the Cyrillic initials B.K. and dated 1910 lower left, also signed and dated on the verso. Housed in an original 19th-century American Stanford White style frame decorated with hand-carved motifs and gilded in three tones. Has an attached paper to the backside that reads: "B. M. Kustodiev. It’s known from biography of B. M. Kustodiev that he visited historian and archeologist I. A. Ryasanovsky in the end of July 1910 in city Kostroma, Russia. He studied architecture and mural Kostroma’s monuments. It’s also known that Kustodiev executed series of tempera work: "Monastery", "In Church", "Fresko of Resurrection on River Dnepr." Provenance: deacquisition from Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio. Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev was a Russian and Soviet artist, portrait painter, theater artist, and decorator. Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1909). Member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (since 1923).
