AUCTION 45: ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 7:
A stereographic image of the USS Brooklyn, the flagship of the famous ‘Flying Squadron’ commanded by Commodore Winfield Scott Schley during the Spanish American War. Schley was hailed as a hero for his actions at the battle of Santiago de Cuba in July of the same year that the image was published. Stereograph images are meant to be used with a stereoscope, a device in which you slot a stereograph and then hold up to your eyes almost like a pair of binoculars, giving the image a sort of three-dimensional effect because of the slight difference in the angle of each photograph.
3 1/2 x 7 in., (8.9 x 17.8 cm.)
Condition: Good overall with expected yellowing due to age and some very minor staining on image.
