AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Lot 110:
A morion helmet from late 16th century Germany, with a large repoussé fleur-de-lis on each side of the helmet, a variety of molded brass flowers, and a small holder for attaching a plume of feathers. At first glance, one might assume this helmet to be French but this exact style, especially in black and silver color, was used by the Munich Civil Guard in the powerful Duchy of Bavaria. An almost identical example can be found in Figure 576 on page 455 of ‘A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor’ by G. C. Stone.
Munich, Duchy of Bavaria – 16th Century.
H: 11 3/4 in., (29.8 cm.)
Condition: Fair condition, with expected signs of age and use. Some dents and scratches throughout. Some minor holes from corrosion in a couple of places. Some of the brass flowers are still extant.
