Empress Maria Fyodorovna dressed as a 17th-century Russian tsarina at a masquerade ball in the à la Russe style. Unknown photographer. On January 25, 1883, the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich hosted a famous masquerade ball with which only the costume ball held in the Winter Palace in February 1903 can be compared with in luxury. This was during the reign of Emperor Alexander III, who was an ardent Russophile and adherent of the idea of Russian nationalism. But Alexander III did not like balls, especially masquerades, and during his reign, not a single ball took place in the Winter Palace, which, however, did not prevent members of the royal family from holding them in their own residences.
Up to 250 noble persons were invited to the ball, and officers were invited from the Cavalry Guards, Life Guards, His Majesty’s Hussars, Preobrazhensky and other regiments. The convention began at the close of the tenth evening. By this time, on the grand staircase, its landing and in the doors of the small dining room stood the servants, dressed in picturesque costumes of different epochs, having a connection with Russian history. Soon the drawing room and dance hall was filled with Russian boyars, boyar women and boyar children, voivodes, knights, Dumnye and Ambassadorial clerks, kravchimi, falconers, trappers, marketeers, horse and foot tenants of the times of John IV, Varangians, Pechenegs, Zaporozhians, Cossacks…
…Her Majesty wore an expensive gold brocade feuze adorned with diamonds, emeralds, rubies, pearls and other jewels; on her shoulder — barms decorated with precious stones; a brocade coat with golden flowers, trimmed with sable fur and with slit sleeves. On Her Majesty’s head was worn a silver crown cap trimmed with sable fur and decorated with large diamonds, emeralds and large pearls, which in several strings descended from the cap to the shoulder.
