‘Histoire de la Rebellion, et des Guerres Civiles d’Angleterre’ or ‘History of the Rebellion and the Civil Wars of England’ is an important work by Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, detailing the history of the English Civil Wars up to the reestablishment of the monarchy under Charles II. Clarendon himself was a key player in the Civil Wars, being involved personally with many of the events detailed in the books, as well as being a close advisor of Charles II, whose brother, the future King James VII & II, married Clarendon’s daughter Anne. This series was the first major history of the English Civil Wars written by someone who had actually participated in them directly.
