This large Kukri comes in its leatherbound, brass-mounted scabbard with one of its two smaller blades (chakmak & karda), possibly the karda. Kukri are Nepalese short swords known for their uniquely curved design and functionality as a multitool. This example exhibits a groove (‘khol’) near the hilt showing waves within a blade. The notch, or ‘kaudi, ‘ seen on the base had various practical and ceremonial uses in Nepali society. The handle is made from a horn with a brass butt cap (‘chapri’) at the end. The scabbard’s brass plate displays depictions of the sun god, Surya, surrounded by solar motifs, and the image of a fish, a possible representation of a god/goddess’s avatar. The sheath for the two smaller blades rests on the scabbard’s back.
