This beautiful navy officer’s sword would have been used for dress or ceremonial purposes. The solid brass half-basket guard bears the image of an Italian crown over a fouled anchor as a cartouche badge, a fold-down locking clip to attach to the scabbard on the back edge, and the head of a bird along the front of the basket. The brass backstrap pommel is a lion’s head and mane and the grip is white fishskin (possibly sharkskin) bound with brass wire. The straight blade is etched for half of the length on both sides with floral and vine motifs incorporating representations of arms, armor, and possibly a coat of arms. On one side of the blade is etched the words "W. LITALIA UNITA" and on the other side near the ricasso is a marking "F. VIGLIANTI FIRENZE." The black leather scabbard is mounted with an embossed brass chape, locket, and center strap hanger band. The chape has a fouled anchor within an oval on the front.

Italy – 19th century.
