A Spanish cup-hilt rapier of the 18th century with a Thomas de Ailia marked blade and a gilt hilt chased with the coat of arms of the Bourbon Spanish kings. Tomas Ayala was a Spanish smith active in the last half of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th. Long after his death, other smiths were using his name as a mark of quality, or variations on the name as in this example.
Toledo, Spain – 18th century.
L: 38 in., (96.5 cm.)
Condition: The sword is in very good condition considering its age. The original gilding is almost entirely well-preserved. The blade has not been re-sharpened. The scabbard is missing.
