A PAIR OF MATCHED DUELLING PISTOLS, ENGLAND, 19TH CENTURY

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: $2,000

Estimated price: $2,500 - $3,000

Buyer's premium:

A matched set of dueling pistols by Richard Johnston of London. The pistols are of typical shape for a flintlock of the early 19th century but with a few added details. The grips are nicely checkered and are adorned with simple medallions on the backstraps, the breech tangs and the trigger guards are both decoratively engraved and, most interestingly, behind the sculpted hammer on each pistol there is a sliding safety catch to prevent the said hammer from striking when it is on half cock.

The lockplates are engraved ‘R. Johnston’, while the octagonal barrels are engraved ‘R. Johnston – St James’s Street.’ St James’s Street and the surrounding district was and is one of the most important areas of London.

The bores are smooth and 17 mm in diameter.

London, England, ca. 1810-1820.

L: 16 in., (40.5 cm.)

Condition: Good action, all parts are tight. Nicely patinated barrels.
