A gentleman’s flintlock pocket pistol by John Bass of London, complete with a custom wooden case with black velvet lining. The pistol is of a boxlock type with a center-mounted hammer. The box is engraved on each side, one side reading ‘BASS’ and the other side reading ‘LONDON’. The underside of the breech is stamped with two proof marks, a crown over a ‘V’ and a crown over a ‘GP’. These marks are associated with the London Proof House, run by The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. John Bass made up one-half of the Twigg and Bass Company from 1788, when John Twigg and John Bass became partners, until Twigg’s death in 1790, with Bass then operating under his own name until his death in 1794.
The pistol has a smooth bore that is 11 mm in diameter.
