AUCTION 50: ANTIQUE MILITARIA, FALL 2024
Лот 470:
A scarce German wheellock gunpowder flask, made of carved wood with inlaid bone, likely from the 16th or 17th century. The flask is trapezoidal in shape with detailed carving, and the bone inlay features a depiction of a man dressed in period hunting attire, holding a musket. This style of imagery is typical of the Renaissance or Baroque periods in Germany.
The wood has been shaped and carved with decorative elements, including bands and geometric patterns around the sides. These carvings serve both as decoration and to highlight the artisan’s skill. The inlaid bone is decorated with an engraving, depicting a figure symbolic of the time, such as a hunter. The craftsmanship of the bone inlay suggests this was a high-quality piece, likely made for a wealthy individual or nobleman.
The spout appears to be made of bone or horn.
Such gunpowder flasks were essential items for those using wheel-lock firearms, as they needed to carry a ready supply of powder for loading. The design and decoration of this flask indicate that it was not merely a functional item but also a piece of art, reflecting the status of its owner. The inlaid bonework and detailed carving suggest it was made for someone of importance or wealth, as simpler flasks would have been made from more basic materials.
