Two very fine pieces of French Chinoiserie bronze inkwells are presented on wooden pedestals. Chinoiserie is a European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and other Sinosphere artistic traditions. This can be seen as each inkwell depicts either a Chinese man and woman of high stature/class or an interpretation of two Chinese deities. Each item was intricately painted, and decorated with colored beads, and fabric liners that have faded over time. The eyes are of glass and painted with pupil and iris color. The tops of both items hinge open to reveal the receptacle where ink would be stored.
France — ca. 1900.
Dimensions: H: 6 1/2 in., (16.5 cm.)
Condition: Very good. Paint fading throughout both items and oxidation in places. Fabric ripped or missing along the bottom of both pieces.
