Attributed to Fernand Leger, an oil on canvas abstract painting. Signed "F.L." and dated 1918 lower right.
Fernand Leger (1881-1955) was a French artist, sculptor, ceramist, and art educator, known as one of the major Cubist painters. Leger originally studied to be a retoucher of photographs and an architect’s draughtsman. When Leger switched to painting, he first worked in a style influenced by Impressionism before destroying most of the work of this period. In 1907, after seeing the painting of Paul Cezanne at the Salon d’Automne, he adopted a more geometrical style. Soon Leger was considered one of the country’s three major Cubist painters along with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
