AUCTION 52: A NEW YORK AUCTION ART FALL SALE
Lot 5:
An unusual terracotta lamp in the shape of a woman’s head, her eyes being hollow to allow light to spring forth from within. The rear of the piece is signed by Doane Powell (1881-1951), a Nebraskan artist most famous for his detailed masks of celebrities, in addition to producing masks for theater and film. The bottom of the piece shows the unglazed terracotta as well as a spoked-wheel stamp with some text, the content of which is difficult to read.
