AUCTION 52: A NEW YORK AUCTION ART FALL SALE
Lot 30:
An antique Islamic engraved bronze globe originating from around the 18th Century. This globe rests on an axle within a graduated ring allowing for full rotation of the entire sphere. The world is ornately engraved with various celestial bodies and figures, depictions of buildings/cities, and two angled rotational bands wrapped around the globe. Numerical symbols are illustrated on each band and Arabic script is seen throughout the globe. These globes were used primarily in the Islamic world to solve problems in celestial astronomy. They would be created with representations of the stars and constellations and their relative positions in the sky to be calculated by the location of the observer.
