‘Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles’, or ‘The Hundred New Novellas’ as it is known in English, is an important French work first compiled in the mid to late 15th Century, likely by Antoine de la Sale, though it was once believed to have been written primarily by Louis XI. The stories were relayed to the compiler by knights, lords, squires, and other members of the court, and feature many raunchy and entertaining tales as well as scathing satirical critiques of normally venerated members of society like priests and noblemen.

This edition was published in 1736 by Pierre Gaillard in Cologne, Germany, and is the third of his editions. The binding is of red morocco leather with gilt decoration at its edges and along its spine, the edges of the pages being gilt as well. At the beginning of each story are engraved illustrations after Romeyn de Hooghe and Bernard Picart, created by one of the various engravers who contributed to this book, including Gilliam van der Gouwen, Laurens Scherm, and Jan van Vianen.

Vol 1: 397 pp.; Vol 2: 389 pp.; ca. 100 engravings.
