‘Lafayette En Amérique’ or ‘Lafayette in America’ is the account of the Marquis de La Fayette’s last journey to the United States of America from July of 1824 to September of 1825. Lafayette was an important figure in both the American and French Revolutions, having fought under Washington in the Continental Army as a Major General, lobbied the French court to increase support for the U.S. during the war, and later became the Commander-in-Chief of the Parisian National Guard, a group for which he proposed the red, white, and blue cockades which later became the French tri-color flag.

Lafayette was invited by the Founding Father and then President James Monroe to come to the U.S. and tour the country for its 50th anniversary. On his trip, he visited every one of the U.S.’s 24 states and met with many important people including Thomas Jefferson, Frances Wright, Andrew Jackson, and James Armistead Lafayette, among others. He was greeted with celebration, parades, and all sorts of fanfare at all the towns and cities he visited.
