Max Kalish, a carved marble figure of a reclining nude woman without a head. The figure has a carved signature ‘Kalish’ on the base.
Max Kalish (1891-1945) was a Polish-born American sculpture. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Academie Colarossi in Paris, France and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Kalish was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1933, and later became a member of the National Sculpture Society. His works are in collections of many US museums, including Smithsonian American Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and North Carolina Museum of Art.
