Plate No. 16 from ‘Wapenhandelinghe van Roers Musquetten ende Spiessen’, an important Dutch manual of arms from an unknown author, illustrated by Jacob de Gheyn II with many copper plate engravings. ‘Wapenhandelinghe’ was translated into many languages and spready rapidly throughout Europe, becoming the most important manual of arms for muskets as their use became more widespread.

This plate depicts a Musketeer blowing sparks away from the pan of his musket. In the same hand that is holding the musket can be seen the furket, which is a stand for stabilizing the gun when aiming, as well as the slow match, the length of burning cord which is lowered into the pan when the trigger is pulled, therefore firing the gun. In the soldier’s right hand can be seen the priming flask which he is about to use to fill the pan.

The Hague, Netherlands — ca. 1607.
