Vasily Polenov, an oil on board autumn landscape painting depicting a view of the Oka river. Signed "V. Polenov" and dated 1911 lower left. Housed in a gilded wooden frame. Has a metal plaque inscribed "A gift from the collection of Martin Steinberg".
Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov (1844-1927) was a Russian landscape artist associated with the Peredvizhniki art movement. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, and was elected a member of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1893. For many years, he coached young painters in the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His pupils included Abram Arkhipov, Isaac Levitan, Konstantin Korovin, and Alexandre Golovine.
