A South Indian pierced iron elephant goad or ankus. The steel blade features fantastical creatures, while the brass butt depicts a dog-like animal coming out from from a tiger’s mouth. Because of its highly decorative appearance this ankus could have been also intended for display in ceremonial processions. A similar example is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Dimensions: L: 15 3/8 in., (39 cm.)
Condition: Very good overall with steel surface slightly pitted
