This Soviet Propaganda Plate addresses the terrible suffering of the Russian people in the famine and the typhus epidemic of 1919–21, which claimed millions of lives, provided tragic subject matter for the porcelain artists. It is part of the series of plates and dishes made for a special sale to raise money for the starving population of the Volga region. Design by Rudolf Vilde (1868-1942), executed by A.A. this most striking of the famine plates in which a worker holding a sledgehammer and a rifle attacks a gloating figure of death – the Great Reaper – who holds a scythe and carries a sheaf of golden wheat. Black Cyrillic letters circling the border read: ‘In Aid of the Famine-stricken Population of the Volga Region’. Stamped in the back with artist’s name and dated 1921.
