The powerful ancient kingdom of Benin was founded in the 14th century AD. Bronze figurines are an example of court art; they were often made by a guild of artisans directly for the king. This figurine depicting a warrior with a shield in his right hand and probably a (lost) sword in his left hand is a typical example of Benin’s art. A headpiece with kawari shells, a distinctly modeled face, a shield surface with relief, a harp ornament on the warrior’s robe demonstrates a very high level of performance.
