An early Victorian British naval sword in its scabbard. The quillons bear the inscription "HMS Cornwallis 1842". HMS Cornwallis was a British battleship that played a major role in the defeat of China in a First Opium War. In August 1842 Treaty of Nanking was signed aboard HMS Cornwallis, one of the consequences of which was the handover of Hong Kong to the British Empire. (Officially Hong Kong became a Crown Colony in 1843).
