An exceptional quality early 19th-century naval dirk, possibly British. With a dolphin-head brass pommel, matching crossguard dolphin head terminals, brass-mounted sheath, and a slightly curved single-edged blade. A very unusual circular form guard embossed on both sides with gilt images of cherubs and armorial decorations in the 17th-century style. An impressive blade is decorated with etching depicting Masonic Maltese crosses, Royal Coat of Arms, and various armorial motifs, that would frequently appear on the period English sabers and naval dirks. The chape of the sheath has possibly been restored. An unusual circular guard makes the style of dirk unique among this type of edged weapon.
Dimensions : L: 15 3/8 in., (39 cm.)
Condition : Overall excellent condition with minor traces of dark patination to the last section of the blade
