The original was painted in 1894, when Moritz Ferdinand von Bissing was commander of the Garde du Corps regiment. He was the Aide-de-Camp to Crown Prince (later Kaiser) Wilhelm II in 1887. Moritz Ferdinand von Bissing later became the military Governor of Belgium in WWI. This painting was commissioned by Bissing’s old officers (there’s a partial listing of who else appears in the picture in the back) and was given to the family sometime after his death, dating it to the 1920s or 1930s. There is an old German exhibition tag on the left side in the back.
