An excellent Indo-Persian dhal shield, dating to the 19th century. It is convex with four brass raised bosses. The iron surface is densely decorated with hand-hammered and chiseled patterning featuring animals, huntsmen, and floral motifs. The reverse of the shield has been handpainted with a floral design against a red ground. The four-ring bolts are still present – these would originally have held two leather handles. This type of shield was used for parrying lance and sword blows. Provenance: Rock Islan Auction, 2016.
Dimensions: D: 20 7/8 in., (43 cm.)
