American model 1841 US Navy Cutlass by N.P. Ames Cabotville Massachusetts, Unit marked guard. Solid brass hilt with fish-scale grip and US Eagle to both sides of the pommel, guard bearing a stamped unit number "No. 72". Straight double-edged blade marked "U.S.N. 1842" and maker on reverse. No scabbard.
