Nice set of four Russian silver-gilt salt cellars by Mariya Semenova, Moscow, circa 1900. Each salt cellar is skillfully decorated with polychrome shaded cloisonne enamel patterns and raised on three ball feet. Presented in its original wooden case with a fitted rose velvet cushion. Inv # 19786, hallmarks 84 proof, MS (Mariya Semenova). Maria Semyonova was one of the few women who owned enamel workshops. She took over the workshop of her father, Vasily Semenov, after his death in 1896, and continued to manage it until the twentieth century.
