Leon Nikolaievitch Bakst (Russian, French, 1866 – 1924), a hand-colored in watercolor and gouache on paper stencil for a stage design of a court lady costume design for Sergei Diaghilev’s (1872-1929) 1921 London Staging of "Sleeping Beauty, " a ballet based after Charles Perrault’s (1628-1703) fairy tale featuring the music of Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Inscribed in French ‘Acte I. 6 Dames de la Cour (Dameuses)’ on the upper right, signed ‘Bakst’ and numbered ‘20’ on the lower right. Matted and framed. Leon Bakst was a Russian painter and scene and costume designer of Belarusian origin. He was a member of the Sergei Diaghilev circle and the Ballets Russes, for which he designed exotic, richly colored sets and costumes. He designed the décor for such productions as "Carnaval" (1910), "Spectre de la rose" (1911), "Daphnis and Chloe" (1912), "The Sleeping Princess" (1921) and others.
