A rare Soviet porcelain chess set "Industry and Agriculture, " Dmitrovsky Porcelain Factory, Verbilki, circa 1933-1934, modeled by Elizaveta Illarionovna Tripolskaya (1881 – 1958). Porcelain, overglaze painting. Complete set. Chess was a means of agitation for a new mechanized life. The king and queen on the part of the "industry" personify mechanical engineering and metallurgy, and the knight and pawn – the creation of "a new energy base and electrification of the whole country." White figures embody the idea of "mechanization of all labor-intensive processes." The pawns, which are a complex composition of a flask, a retort, and a book with the formula of nitric acid fertilizers, embody the "chemicalization" of agriculture.
