Old Bakongo-Yombe carved wood maternity figure, Phemba, Republic of Congo. The sculpture depicts the figure of a mother cradling her child and sitting crossed legs atop of a cylindrical hut with an alligator climbing on the wall. Phemba are iconic examples of Kongo art and reflect the degree to which women are treasured in Kongo culture, not just for their fecundity, but as seers and guardians of the spirit.19th century.
Dimensions: H: 13 in., (33 cm.)
Condition: Good with expected signes of wear.
