Ivan Vasilievich Bugayevsky-Blagodarny (Russian, 1777 — 1860), pastel on paper painting depicting Madonna with Child and St. John the Baptist. Signed in Cyrillic lower left and twice dated 1849 lower left and lower rightProvenance: Sotheby’s London, New Bond Street, Russian Art Day Sale 06.03.2014, lot 112.Ivan Bugayevsky-Blagodarny studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg with Stepan Semenovich Shchukin (1762-1828), and graduated from the Academy in 1974. As of 1824, he was made a full Academician. Bugayevsky-Blagodarny was particularly well known for his portraiture, including his well known portraits of Borovikovsky, now in the collection of the Tretyakov Museum, as well as his portrait of Field Marshal Kutuzov from 1813. Bugayevsky-Blagodarny also painted religious motifs.

Condition: Good, no apparent signs of restoration. The frame is chipped.
