Miniature watercolor on paper painting depicting an early morning seascape with ships in harbor by Willard Morse Mitchell (Canadian, 1879/1881 — 1955). Matted and framed. The paper label attached to the backside reads: ‘Early morning outside the harbor of St. John, New Brunswick — Red Head in the background. A watercolor by W.M. Mitchell of Montreal, P.Q.’ Willard Morse Mitchell was a painter, architect, carver, draftsman and educator. His primary medium was miniature watercolor and gouache paintings of landscapes, historic sites, snowscapes, street scenes and winter sports. He carved their frames and attached labels on the backs of each work. The paintings locations included Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Italy, Morocco and Greece. His style could be described as Naturalism or Realism.
