Marc Chagall (Russian, French, 1887-1985), 1948 etching Chichikov se Rase [Chichikov Shaves Himself], an illustration from Chagall’s edition of Les Ames Mortes [Dead Souls] by Nikolai Gogol. Signed in pencil on the lower right margin. Matted and framed. Has a Doyle auction house paper label attached to the lower right corner.Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian artist of a devout Jewish family. In 1907 Chagall entered the famous Art School in St. Petersburg while working as a sign painter. Throughout his works, there is a foundation of Russian artistic techniques. In 1910 Chagall was in Paris and became influenced by the Cubist period of art. Chagall is world renown and one of the masters of color. The whole world was his canvas and he filled it with color.
