Nikolai Konstantinovich Kalmakov (Russian, (1873 – 1955), oil on paperboard painting titled Hebe and the Eagle of Jupiter. Hebe (the daughter of Zeus and Hera) was a Greek goddess of youth and the cupbearer of the gods. This painting depicts the reclining Heba with an eagle, her father’s messenger. Monogrammed and dated lower left.Provenance: Shapiro Auctions New York, 05.18.2019, lot 204. Nikolai Konstantinovich Kalmakov was a symbolist artist known for his mystical paintings. Nikolai Kalmakov was one of the most enigmatic and controversial figures in Russian art of the first half of the 20th century.

Condition: Good, no apparent signs of restoration.
