Estimated price: $800 - $1,000

Buyer's premium:

This early 19th century German Hirschfänger (deercatcher) dagger may look utilitarian at first glance, but a closer inspection will show a fine attention to detail. The trapezoidal clamshell guard has an intricate engraving of a hound chasing a stag through the woods, and the blade has various gold-inlaid engravings showing hounds, stags, spears, and guns. There’s also a depiction of a woman blowing a horn, adorned with various plants, with a dog at her feet. Possibly a depiction of Artemis, or Germania. On the back of the blade is a gold-inlaid inscription denoting the manufacturer: ‘Pierre Guillaume Knecht Fabriquant à Solingen’.

L: 29 in., (73.5 cm.)

Condition: Good with some wear to the leather scabbard. The skinning knife is missing.
