AUCTION 43: ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 198:
A Pattern 1859 Naval Cutlass, without scabbard. There is pitting along most of the blade, but no rust remains. Otherwise, the sword is in great condition. Maker’s marks are clearly visible on both sides of the ricasso. One side is an as yet to be identified symbol, and the other is a crown over two ‘broad arrows’, then an ‘S’, then the number ‘8’. The ‘S’ denotes production in Solingen. A similar mark appears on the base of the handle. The pommel is inscribed with the initials ‘J.C’ followed by the numbers ‘330’. The handguard is mostly devoid of pitting, with some surface staining underneath.
L: 32 1/4 in., (82 cm.)
Condition: The blade is pitted. The makers marks are clearly visible on the ricasso.
