AUCTION 43: ANTIQUE ARMS AND ARMOR
Lot 226:
A large Transcaucasian dagger of a characteristic form with a 21 1/2-inch double-edged ponty blade. The blade is decorated with gold inlay and the deep fuller on each side with silver inlay. The front part of the blade bears two cartouches with maker’s marks. The Arabic inscriptions are hard to read but it may be the following: "WITH THIS SWORD WE CAN LIBERATE THIS LAND". The hilt is made of two polished horn scales. The scabbard is made of wood covered in dark-brown leather. The fittings are made of low-grade silver decorated with engraving.
First half of the 19th century.
L: 29 3/4 in., (75.5 cm.)
Condition: Very good for the age. Minor signs of wear. The chape ball is missing.
