The entirety of the bust and pedestal are carved from one piece of wood, probably pine. The base of the pedestal is carved with the name Marco Aurelio, being the Italian rendition of Marcus Aurelius, though the bust does not accurately represent his likeness and is likely the sculptor’s idea of what a Roman Emperor would look like generally rather than an accurate depiction of Marcus Aurelius in particular.

The man is shown wearing a hairstyle more similar to that of Augustus, the first emperor, and is wearing a laurel crown atop his head that is held on with a decoratively tied ribbon. The man is also clean-shaven, another feature in which he differs from Marcus Aurelius. He is wearing a type of armor that the Romans called Lorica Squamata, a chest piece made of hundreds of overlapping metal scales called ‘squamae’ that are sewn to a cloth backing.

H: 23 in., (58.5 cm.)

Condition: Very good overall with only minor ruts from woodworms and a small chip on the front of the toga that is hard to notice as it blends in well with the folds and is not discolored.
