Sergei Yurievich Sudeikin (Russian, 1882 – 1946), oil on cardboard painting titled "Fixing Her Hair (Ruby Elzy)." The painting depictis a portrait of Ruby Elzy performing her role at Porgy and Bess. Ruby Pearl Elzy (February 20, 1908 – June 26, 1943) was an American operatic soprano. She appeared on stage and in films. Elzy created the role of Serena in George Gershwin’s folk opera Porgy and Bess and performed in it more than eight hundred times. Signed by the artist lower right, inscribed in pencil on the backside. Bears multiple auctions paper labels. Provenance: Sotheby’s London, New Bond Street, Russian Paintings Day Sale, 06/07/2011, lot 259.
